Josh is a black belt in Isshinryu Karate and believes you get what you put out in life. His earning a black belt and discovering his passion for percussion have been aligned with the discipline and philosophy taught to him 29 years ago. He truly experienced his passion for percussion when he picked up his first pair of drum sticks at the age of thirteen. He knew he wanted a career that entailed him being heard on the radio playing drums so he improvised and made music. Josh has a wide spectrum of musicians to whom he has looked up to for many years; these include: Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, Nicko Mcbrain, Carter Beauford, Stewart Copeland, Todd Sucherman, Ray Luzier, Tre Cool, Rob Kurth, Lucky Lehrer, Vinnie Paul, Pete Finestone, and countless others. Josh has an affinity towards the sciences. In his spare time you can find him under the stars viewing other worlds through his telescope, or in a laboratory studying what’s under the microscope. He’s earned a degree in Biology and Astro - Physics. Another passion is working out to maintain the physical endurance that comes along with playing the drums. He prefers a high protein diet and has a weakness for frozen yogurt. He also finds time to nurture his soul with meditation and Andean Shamanism, a holistic approach to healing. He also experiences satisfaction when taking long walks with his best furry friend, his German Shepard named Ricco. Josh feels that life is full of color, personalities, and when he asks his higher self about the true meaning of life, there’s a small voice that replies, ‘you get what you put out’ so he invests a lot by his approachable nature and always feels like he learns something new every day. He believes in the theory of honoring each individual that crosses his path. As a drummer, he feels his purpose is to invite the fans to live their dreams, feeding his soul and in alignment with the philosophy of ‘getting what you put out’ in life.

IF “Playing” IS A “Real” POSSIBILITY

Josh Loren was the drummer of local L.A. band, Harmful If Swallowed. Being one of three original band members, it seems surreal to Josh when he reflects on the last 29 years of his life as a musician. As a young boy, when asked what he wanted to do for living, he would respond, “I want to be heard on the radio, playing drums!”

KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS!

Most would think at such a tender age he would have wanted to be a pilot or rocket launcher but no, Josh’s response was, “I want to be a drummer!” He truly experienced his passion for percussion when he picked up his first pair of drum sticks at the age of thirteen. “Twenty-nine years seems like yesterday when you love what you do”, Josh says with a smile.

FOOLING AROUND, PAYS OFF

It was in 1991, (where he played his first gig), he recalls along side his younger brother and high school friend, when he decided to put their talents together to form a band called, "Harmful If Swallowed". The name today stands for itself as all concur that their music is an ‘intoxicating force of nature’. Josh takes pride in creating unique sounds and cherishes being part of a classical talent that creates music, raw and fresh from inspiration. He believes dedication, an open mind, and following through, are key components in sustaining the level of excellence his band has produced all those years. You can hear the level of talent reflected in third album, which encompasses more of their vision as a whole. This evolutionary project fluctuates from lessons of life into a more alternative groove without abandoning this roots of hard to soft punk, creating an amazingly unique sound.

JOURNEY AND LIFESTYLE

Josh’s work has lead him on a journey and a lifestyle he is very proud of today. His band, shortly known as H.I.S., has successfully produced two full length albums “Server”, and “The Chronicles of Losing” and an EP “Allergy” which all have singles on 106.7FM, “The World Famous KROQ”. These successes are H.I.S. latest work. Reminiscing of the good old days, he recalls recording a demo with Casey McMackin. Who has worked with such artist as Megadeth, Celine Dion, Motorhead, Natalie Cole, and Perry Farrell. This early experience of his career gave Josh insight and introduced him to the business aspect of the industry taking him beyond his creative aspirations. Furthering his career along with a series of songs on MTV Programming, Pandora, iTunes and other digital medias. Their talents have also allured many other entertainment medias, including press exposure in Rolling Stone Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. H.I.S. has also had the opportunity to be affiliated with the Brandon Cruz production, called “Eddie Is a Punk”, who recorded with the late Harry Nilsson, along with Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, Greg Heston of Bad Religion and Circle Jerks and Brandon Cruz himself. Working with these artists helped the band get industry recognition and airtime on television shows like Entertainment Tonight, A Current Affair and KTLA Channel 5 News. These accolades were part of a journey when they decided to put their talent towards a good cause and raise money towards prostate cancer research, in honor of the late Bill Bixby. A cause near and dear to Josh Loren. Josh humbly states, “Playing in front of an audience for most is an unreachable dream”, yet he has the opportunity to do this and he recognizes, “I am fortunate to live my passion every day of my life, especially for a good cause”.

Josh’s latest work with H.I.S and Notoriety, includes engineer, Chris Rakestraw; Grammy winning producer Matt Hyde famously known for his work with “No Doubt”, “Sublime”, “Sum 41” and “Slayer”. Keyboardist, song writer, Tionno Banks who contributed his creative genius spin to H.I.S.’s new EP, "Allergy".  Banks is a former instructor at the Music Institute, and has worked with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Paula Abdul, including John Taylor and Simon LeBon of Duran Duran; and is still an active inner circle for Josh as they remain close and dear friends to this day.
